Cats Incredible gets new lease on life

The Cats Incredible catfishing tournament is coming home.

The East Grand Forks Association of Fire Fighters announced this morning that they’re taking over the Cats Incredible Catfish Tournament from The Chamber of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Citing declining participation and interest, The Chamber recently said it would cancel this year’s tournament April 17 if the tournament limit of 125 two-person teams wasn’t reached.

At the time, only 78 teams had signed up for the tournament.

In a news release, The Chamber and Fire Fighters group said they will work together this year to make sure the transition goes smoothly. Cats Incredible has its roots in East Grand Forks, where it was founded in 1988. Organization of Cats Incredible moved across the river to Grand Forks in 2005 when the chamber groups merged.

Teams already registered with the tournament will be transferred to the new event, and there’s still room for additional teams to sign up. With the leadership change, though, there’s no longer a requirement that the tournament reach its full allotment of teams.

“It is our goal to maintain the longstanding tradition of a quality catfish tournament in East Grand Forks,” Jeff Anderson, president of the Fire Fighters Union, said in a statement. “We do not anticipate making any tournament or rules changes from previous years.”

Additional information and entry forms are still available on The Chamber website. Teams looking to enter the tournament should submit their entries to the East Grand Forks Fire Fighters at 415 Fourth St. NW, East Grand Forks 56721. For more information, email iafflocal3423@yahoo.com.

Greenway cross-country skiing update

A column I wrote back in January complaining about the lack of snow proves once again you have to be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.

We’ve got snow, more is on the way, and it doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. That’s a far cry from this weekend last year, when temperatures across the region soared into the 70s, and the weather seemed more like late May than mid-March.

The about-face in our snowfall fortunes is good news for cross-country skiing enthusiasts, snowmobilers and others who don’t mind the ground covered in white.

Just this morning, officials from the Grand Forks Greenway sent out a news release saying the  cross-country skiing season along the Greenway trails isn’t over yet. Plans were scrapped to groom the trails from Riverside Dam to 47th Avenue South this morning because of the wind, but looking for grooming to occur once the snow stops falling this weekend.

Meanwhile, here are cross-country ski access points for the Greenway trails:

Riverside Dam parking lot (just off Red Dot Place).

West parking lot in Riverside Park.

Seventh Avenue North access.

The lower parking lot north of the Sorlie Bridge downtown.

Lincoln golf clubhouse.

Elmwood access.

Sunbeam access.

47th Avenue South.

Trail in Lincoln Drive Park is available again with a skate-ski trail, too.

Snowmobilers to share Greenway with ice bike racers Saturday

Greenway officials are asking snowmobilers using the Greenway trails in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks to use extra caution Saturday, when ice biking enthusiasts will be sharing the trails.

Saturday’s ice bike adventure race is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and could draw more than 125 ice bike racers to the Greenway trails. Snowmobilers should use caution and allow plenty of clearance for race participants when using the trail.
