I had a chance to spend some time on the ice Saturday afternoon for a story on the Devils Lake Volunteer Fire Department’s 34th annual Ice Fishing Tournament. And while deadlines didn’t allow me to stick around for the whole event, it was obvious the 4,500 to 5,000 anglers who braved the elements to try their luck were having a great time.

For the fishing portion of the event, prizes are awarded for the top five perch, walleyes and northern pike. It’s not necessarily about the biggest fish in each of those categories, either, as lower placings can be worth more than first place.

That adds to the fun of the event, which this year offered more than $325,000 in prizes between the fishing and raffle portions of the annual extravaganza.

Here are the results from the fishing portion of Saturday’s tournament:

First: Randy Shervey, Chippewa Falls, Wis., 1.22 pounds, $2,000.

Second: Ethan Mohr, Moorhead, 1.12 pounds, $1,500.

Third: Ty Berg, Williston, N.D., .88 pounds, side-by-side UTV.

Fourth: Tim Brusseau, Walhalla, N.D., .77 pounds, $750.

Fifth: Rydell Becker, Valley City, N.D., .68 pounds, $500.
