State Parks Across The Region To Offer First Day Hike Events

Turtle River State Park near Arvilla, N.D., and Itasca and Lake Bemidji state parks in northwest Minnesota are among the state parks offering First Day Hikes on Monday, Jan. 1, New Year’s Day.

The “Hike off the Holidays” First Day Hike at Turtle River State Park is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. New Year’s Day. More information is available by calling the park at (701) 594-4445 or by email at

In Minnesota, First Day Hike participants will join park naturalists on hikes to learn more about the respective destinations and their landscapes and wildlife in winter.  The Itasca hike is scheduled to follow the Schoolcraft Trail out to Schoolcraft Island, weather permitting. The three-hour hike begins at 12:30 p.m., and participants should meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center. Trail routes are subject to change based on weather and snowshoe conditions. A First Day Snowshoe hike is scheduled for 10 to 11:30 a.m. New Year’s Day at Lake Bemidji State Park. Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the park office. Snowshoes can be reserved by calling ahead or visitors can bring their own. More information is available at (218) 308-2300.

In a news release, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said the First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide effort to start the new year by promoting fresh air and physical activity. More than 400 hikes are scheduled in all 50 states, the DNR said.

In North Dakota, First Day Hikes also are scheduled at Cross Ranch State Park, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and Fort Stevenson State Park.
