More than 900 students from 38 North Dakota high school teams are participating in this year’s North Dakota State High School Clay Target League spring trap shooting season, which began April 2.

This year’s total of 908 students compares 565 students on 23 teams last year.

The numbers make a case for the growing popularity of clay target shooting in the high school ranks.

“We are very pleased with the growth of clay target shooting as an activity for North Dakota high school athletes” Jim Sable, executive director of the NDSHSCTL, said in a statement. “Such high participation shows the continued demand for alternative high school activities related to North Dakota’s longstanding outdoor traditions.”

Upon completion of the spring season May 28, all student athletes are invited to participate in individual and team competitions at the 2017 State Tournament, set for June 17 at The Shooting Park in Horace, N.D.

League participants shoot at their hometown ranges, which keeps travel to a minimum, and conferences are determined by team size rather than geographic location. Teams then compare scores with other schools in their conference to determine rankings and overall standings.
