Coyote and other predator hunts have gained popularity in recent years, but the Lake Region Sportsmen’s Club in Devils Lake is adding a new twist next month when it sponsors a Canada Goose Hunt and Raffle.
Larry Weigel of the Lake Region Sportsmen’s Club sent me some info about the event over the weekend.
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department again this year is opening the early Canada goose season in August as part of an effort to lower the population of resident birds, which have become overabundant to the point they’re causing crop depredation problems for many farmers.
This year’s early goose season in North Dakota is scheduled to open Aug. 15.
Registration for the Lake Region club’s Canada Goose Hunt and Raffle is scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Flyway Bar in Webster, N.D. Tickets cost $20, including the raffle, and points will be awarded for the most Canada geese shot, with bonus points awarded for teams who have a youth member on their four-person squad.
After the hunt, teams will check in at the Ramsey County Event Center, located on state Highway 19 west in Devils Lake, and Ramsey County 4-H will be offering a noon meal. Arrangements have been made to have harvested geese donated to a local food bank.
Raffle prizes feature a 6×12-foot enclosed decoy trailer, an S&W Sport .223 rifle and a women’s package valued at $900.
Advance ticket holders can preregister for the hunt by calling and providing their ticket number to Weigel at (701) 351-4090, Tom Rost at (701) 350-1424 or Tyler Knutson, (701) 351-5119.
