This week’s warm, windy weather has dealt a bit of a setback to ice fishing along the south shore of Lake of the Woods.
Sportsman’s Lodge on Wednesday was advising no travel on the main lake near Pine Island. High winds and warm weather shifted the ice north of Pine Island, creating areas of open water.
An aerial photo taken Wednesday and posted on the Sportsman’s Lodge Facebook page shows the extent of the crack that opened north of Pine Island.
The good news is that there’s no snow on the lake and with colder temperatures in the forecast, ice conditions should start improving in a hurry.
The story is similar at the Northwest Angle, where Sportsman’s Oak Island Lodge reported 2 to 7 inches of ice, less in current areas, between Young’s Bay on the Angle mainland and Oak Island. The wind had pushed around the ice in places south of Oak, and no travel is recommended until the wind calms down and ice conditions improve.
It will happen eventually, but for now anglers should hold off and err on the side of caution.
