Youth deer season reminders

With a July heat wave upon us, and no end to the warm blast in sight, hunting season might seem like a distant dream for many outdoors enthusiasts.

But in some cases, application deadlines are fast approaching; or, in some cases, already past.

The Minnesota Deer Hunters Association this week issued a reminder about special youth deer hunts on tap throughout the state this fall. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is offering 14 special youth hunts this fall, and only a limited number of permits are available. Prospective hunters now can apply at any Electronic License System vendor or online here. The application deadline is Aug. 17.

Here’s a look at the youth deer hunts available in northwest Minnesota.

Buffalo River State Park: Nov. 3-4, firearm, 14 either-sex permits available, bag limit of two, mandatory orientation clinic Nov. 2.

Itasca State Park: Oct. 13-14, firearm, 75 either-sex permits, bag limit of two, mandatory orientation clinic Oct. 6 or Oct. 12.

Lake Bemidji State Park: Oct. 13-14, firearm, 20 either-sex permits, bag limit of two, mandatory orientation clinic Oct. 12.

Rydell National Wildlife Refuge: Oct. 20-21, firearm, 20 either-sex permits, bag limit of one, mandatory orientation Sept. 22.

Zippel Bay State Park: Oct. 13-14, firearm, 20 either-sex permits, bag limit of two, mandatory orientation Oct. 12.

North Dakota’s resident youth season for 14- and 15-year-old hunters begins at noon Sept. 14 and continues through Sept. 23.  The deadline to apply for an antlered mule deer tag in some western units was June 6, but the deadline for regular youth licenses is Sept. 1.

North Dakota’s other youth season, an antlerless whitetail hunt for 12- and 13-year-old hunters, also opens at noon Sept. 14 and continues through Sept. 23. The application deadline is Sept. 1.
