If a fishing trip is on your agenda, you could do a lot worse than the Garrison Dam Tailrace on the Missouri River right now.
I’ve only fished the Tailrace once, in the late 1980s, but after seeing the reports since late August, it’s high on my places-to-go list.
Just in the past week, 11 of the 12 fish registered in the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s Whopper Club came from the Tailrace, including rainbow trout as big as 14 pounds and walleyes up to 9½ pounds. The big story, of course, was the 15-pound, 4-ounce walleye Alecia Berg of Minot caught below the Tailrace on Aug. 27, which was the biggest walleye to be reported in North Dakota since 1959.
